The Usual Steps
- Site & soil evaluationDeep test holes and percolation tests show how the soil drains and how deep the bedrock and seasonal groundwater are.
- Design & permitA design is prepared to New York's standards for residential onsite systems, then submitted for local approval. Depending on the property, the town or the county health department is involved.
- Installation & sign-offThe tank, distribution and absorption area are installed and inspected, then the site is backfilled and seeded.
What Drives the Price
- Soil and site: good soil allows a conventional field. Shallow rock or high groundwater can mean a raised or engineered system
- Size: systems are sized to the number of bedrooms
- Access: steep or tight lots, long pipe runs, and pump-up systems add cost
- Restoration: driveways, walls, landscaping and lawns disturbed during the work
Adding Bedrooms?
If you're finishing a basement or adding an addition with bedrooms, ask early whether the existing system is big enough. Expanding or replacing it is easier to plan before construction than after.
Questions
How long does a septic replacement take?
The installation itself is often a matter of days once permits are in hand. Testing, design and approval usually take longer than the digging. Your contractor gives you a realistic timeline.
Can I keep my old tank?
Sometimes, if it's sound, the right size, and fits the new design. The designer and the installer will decide based on its condition.
