Signs the Field Is Struggling
- Soggy ground, standing water or a sewage smell over the field, especially when it hasn't rained
- A strip of grass greener than the rest of the lawn, following the field lines
- Slow drains throughout the house even right after pumping
- The tank refilling from the outlet side when it's pumped
What Can Cause It
The most common cause is solids leaving the tank because of skipped pumping or a missing baffle, which clog the gravel and soil. Others include too much water at once (several loads of laundry back to back, a leaking toilet), vehicles or construction compacting the field, roots, a settled distribution box, and seasonal high groundwater in low-lying parts of the county.
Options, From Smallest to Largest
- Fix the causePump the tank, replace the baffle or filter, relevel the D-box, fix leaks, and spread out water use. A field that's only overloaded sometimes recovers.
- Partial repairReplacing a crushed line, adding a section, or resting part of the field, depending on the design.
- Field replacementA new absorption area, which needs proper soil evaluation and a design that meets current rules.
Orange County Conditions
Shallow soil over bedrock in the Highlands, slowly draining soils in parts of the valleys, and a high water table near low farmland can all limit what kind of field will work. A replacement may need percolation testing and a design before a permit is issued. Your contractor will coordinate with the town or the county health department.
Questions
Can a drain field be saved?
Sometimes, if the problem is caught early and the cause is fixed: hydraulic overload, a bad baffle, or a settled D-box. Fields with soil clogged by solids over many years usually need replacement.
Can I drive or build over my drain field?
No. Vehicles, sheds, pools and patios compact the soil and can crush pipes. Keep the field covered with grass and keep heavy loads off it.
